The Science Behind My SciFi Books

The Earth from Space at Dawn

Note: Thus begins tech talk, ongoing as I empty my head of imagination + space research.

THE INGREDIENTS FOR TELEPORTATION AND TIME TRAVEL

1.         The hot marble (called a noretha in Lanthran).

A hot marble looks just like the glass toy marble used in kids’ games. Also called a spin glass, this round object stores the coordinates for a corridor in space. For instance, a hot marble might contain all the gravitational resonance data needed to describe the matrix of space from Earth to Mars or even to a planet in another galaxy. (Or to a sun, or to asteroids, or way out in nowhere.) Obviously, knowing the destination is vital. You would not want to teleport across the universe without the proper survival equipment. In The Horned Edge (Book 3), I describe a forgetful magus who fully opened the connection to a moon. The vacuum of space sucked the unfortunate Lanthran scientist to his horrible death.

How does a hot marble work?

First, let’s look at an ordinary marble. An ordinary marble that feels firm and solid at room temperature is actually a liquid. It is composed of trace elements mixed with silicon. The atoms in the ordinary marble slowly float around in seemingly random directions.

But in a hot marble, the trace elements seem random, but are not. The particles’ properties create many subsets of order within the marble’s closed boundary. I imagine that the hot marble’s atomic subsets are like tiny 3-D quilt squares. Jillions (Avogadro’s number times the mass of the marble) of these moving, floating subsets describe one specific part of the fabric of space.

The liquid glass of the hot marble moves because space moves. Space stretches, orbits, wobbles, coalesces into a planet or moon, contracts into a black hole. The trapped atomic and subatomic patterns in the hot marble duplicate the gravitational signatures picked by receptors such as interferometer farms and orbiting telescopes. When a hot marble is manufactured, hot silicon gas mixed with specific metallic and nonmetallic elements is forced into a mold. As the mixture cools, the coordinates between sectors of space are played (like recording music on a phonograph) into the gas mix until it cools into a solid marble.

How can a hot marble enable teleportation or time travel? That’s a discussion for another post.

What’s coming next.

Other parts of the technological system that I invented for my science fiction novels include the following:

  • The control center with its iridium rings.
  • The sonic petabyte computers.
  • The observation portal (looks like a flat table or television screen).
  • The tap into Earth’s or another world’s core toward its center of gravity and the accretion disk (i.e., event horizon).

Thank you for your comment. I find these very helpful..
